Electrophysiologic procedures such as catheter ablation and/or cardiac resynchronization
therapy (CRT) are usually performed under fluoroscopic guidance alone.
Using MediGuide technology, continuous fluoroscopy is no longer required to ascertain the
position of the device/catheter. Avoiding fluoroscopy minimizes the radiation exposure for
both patients and medical staff.
The system consists of sensors mounted on a catheter introduced into the body and an
electromagnetic receiver positioned under the patient's bed. The location measurement is
based on sensing the distance between sensors from several sources of magnetic radiation
within the transmitter, with an accuracy of fractions of a millimeter.
The 3-D position and orientation of the sensors can be calculated in real time and projected
graphically on a fluoroscope, CT, MRI, ultrasound, or 3-D reconstructed image
of the anatomy.
