Background
The small intestine (small bowel) is about 20 feet long and about an inch in diameter.
Its purpose is to absorb most of the nutrients from the consumed food.
The small intestine is an area that is impossible to reach with traditional endoscopy tools.

Given Imaging (today Medtronic) was the first company to develop a video capsule for endoscopy.
The PillCam is a camera inside a capsule that captures images as it travels through the GI system and wirelessly transmits the video outside the body.
Its purpose is to detect lesions or polyps in the GI with a non-invasive, patient-friendly device.
