Bone anchors, lodged into a patient's bone, are used to secure sutures, to hold in place soft tissues, such as tendons and ligaments. Accordingly, bone anchors are useful for many types of both open and arthroscopic orthopedic surgery. Modern bone anchors generally share a common design, differing primarily by diameter and material. Bone anchors today are quite short and penetrate the bone superficially. Since bone anchors are becoming more popular in orthopedic trauma surgery, they need to address the demands of trauma surgery: A weakened bone due to contusion and bone bruise at the site of injury, and the need for firm adherence to tendons and ligaments.
There is a present need for a bone anchor that is suitable for implantation in bones at multiple depths tailoring to each particular need, thereby eliminating the need to maintain a multitude of different bone anchor lengths, fast and easy to apply during surgery, and easily supporting sutures while avoiding contact with the surrounding bone.
